Feeding The Birds.
Caring for the environment is an essential part of Montessori Practical Life activities. One aspect of this care involves tending to our classroom pet parakeets. Through simple, purposeful actions, children learn empathy, consistency, and respect for living beings.
After the lead teacher gives students a lesson on accomplishing this task, the students:
- Retrieve the water bowl from the cage.
- Empty the old water.
- Rinse and fill the bowl with fresh, clean water
- Carefully put the bowl back in the cage.
- They can even talk to the birds, so they don’t feel lonely 🙂
Each action, though small, contributes to a larger sense of stewardship and belonging. Outside of school, parents may notice children start taking care of their pets, cleaning up after dinner, or tending to the garden.
