Bread Baking as a Practical Life Activity

Students at King’s Wood Montessori are busy baking bread! This lesson embodies all the goals of Practical Life: order, concentration, coordination, and independence. The work is prepared by the lead teacher to give the children independence in putting together the ingredients in the proper order, mixing, and then kneading and shaping the dough (oh, what fun!). Next, of course, is clean up. Children wash the dishes, table, and countertops. The children see how the dough rises after an hour, and then we bake! The class devours the bread together at line time with a little butter or olive oil, or plain, too, and thank the children who made the delicious bread.

When building a loving, joyful community, breaking (and making) bread together never begins too early and is always in style!

Over the course of the years, students have baked banana bread, country loaves, cookies, etc., and shared them with their friends, family, and our essential workers.
