King’s Wood Montessori first opened in 1968 in a rented storefront in Foxboro. The $100 registration fees of its original fourteen families covered the rent, Montessori materials and the salary of its single teacher. These founding members believed that the Montessori method of education, which is based on responsible freedom of the individual in the Montessori prepared environment, would give their children unique self-sufficiency and competence. In 1969 the school purchased an old barn that had served as a canoe factory as well as the offices of “Heckter’s Scientific Company”. The parents did all the renovating, and transformed the barn into an educational setting capable of withstanding all the enthusiasm that sixty preschoolers can muster! More than 45 years later, King’s Wood remains a parent-owned, non-profit school serving children from over fifteen communities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
